The Issue

Growing up in the heart of East Austin, Texas, my childhood neighborhood revolved around a street that was known as "First Street." This wasn't just a name; it was an identity. It carried memories for countless families and generations who lived, struggled thrived In our community. Years ago this iconic street underwent a name change to "Cesar Chavez Street." While Cesar Chavez is a historical figure , this changed erased a piece of local history that many Austinites hold dear to our heart.

The significance of "First Street" extends beyond it’s a reminder of the Mexican community that is the soul of our childhood home (El Barrio). This street name was more than a designation; for many of us It defined where we came from and who we are.
El Concilio & East Town Lake Citizen Neighborhood Association are requesting your signature on this petition to request the Austin City Council to restore the original name, "First Street," .

This change matters because it’s a major impact on the identity of our City and the stories we pass on to future generations. By restoring "First Street," we Honor History of remembering the authentic fabric of East Austin!!

We urge the Austin City Council to take into consideration of us residents and the ones who remember their roots. Let’s preserve the authentic history that makes Austin unique. **Please sign this petition** to show your support for reinstating the original name of (First Street ) and preserving a crucial part of East Austin's heritage & history! Please take a moment to Share!! Thank you
