Rename Canada to 'America'
The Issue
I propose renaming Canada to 'America'. As a proud Canadian, I firmly believe that our nation holds a rightful place in the geographical tapestry of the Americas. Canada, a vast and magnificent country within the continent of North America, deserves more recognition that surpasses the continental moniker it has carried so far.
The United States of America has, for over 250 years, essentially called itself a "bunch of states" rather than a uniquely identified nation. All true great counties have a name - Like 'Germany. Italy. Agentina. China. The United States, In essence, lack a distinct name. While most countries have names that are distinct and encapsulate their national identity, the name of the United States is more descriptive of its composition than an identity. Therefore, their hesitation to adopt a distinct name over several centuries suggests a missed opportunity and a failing. "You snooze, you lose," so they say.
Renaming Canada to 'America' is not just a matter of changing a name; it is about embracing our identity as part of the wider Americas. It is about rightfully positioning ourselves within the context of our geographical lineage. This change would signal an endearing recognition of being dominant part of the Americas, while also making a bold statement about national pride. It would also irritate the collection of states to the south that is so dysfunctional they cannot even give themselves a name are stuck at a description.
Our proposed new name represents a chance to redefine perceptions. It encourages a fresh understanding of our national character and offers an opportunity to chart new cultural and diplomatic courses in partnership with our continental neighbours. "America " works well with Hockey and Maple syrup.
