The Issue

Long before the (former) Adam Smith Building was ingloriously stripped of its name and became 42 Bute Gardens, it had a famous resident: Miller the Cat. Miller was a feline campus icon who visited the building daily to wander into lectures, sit in on tutorials and warm himself up on the radiators. He had a huge online following, and even inspired a short film.

Though he lived locally, he could regularly be found here receiving scritches and cuddles from students and staff.

Miller sadly passed away in 2015 at the age of 18, but his legacy and impact live on in memory, and in the building's student common room, named in honour of Miller.

Given the building's recent unceremonious de-naming and the ensuing confusion, it's clear we need a new name.

We call on the Campus Names Committee to rename it the "Miller the Cat Building." Or, if that's too silly, the "Miller Building" would do.

Why?

  • Doing so would immortalise Miller's memory and highlight his companionship and service to the University.
  • It would create a welcome PR boost for the university community - imagine the media coverage!
  • It's not like some rich person is going to sponsor this grey concrete carbuncle to get their name on it. Let them pay for the shiny new ones.
  • Bonus: unlike naming something after a human, we can be 100% sure that Miller was a sweet and kind soul his whole life - no chance of discovering embarrassing secrets and having to quietly rename it.

Let's embrace Miller's affection, warmth and joy and immortalise his memory forever in these drafty halls, wonky corridors and misaligned floors.

Join us in this cause, honour Miller's memory, and sign the petition!
