Removing the song "Zanmi Femme" from Zafem's "LAS" album is a step ahead to stop spreading misogyny and sexism, through popular culture, that affect women and girls lives in Haiti.
The group Zafem is composed of famous singer Reginald Cangé and talented singer/songwriter Dener Ceide. They are active since 2019 and have released 2 popular singles: Savalou and Ala de ka Papa. On May 5, 2023 they released their first album: LAS.
The last track, however, is a cover of the Méridional des Cayes' 1975 hit "Zanmi Femme" adapted with moderns instruments and arrangements. The song starts with the words : "Bèl fanm ti sèvèl" which literally translates into "Beautiful woman are ignorant/dumb". This title is spreading misogyny and sexism through the lyrics by stating that friendship and solidarity between women is a huge danger to society, and so, it's necessary for men to prevent it, because otherwise it might result to women breaking marital ties and engage in prostitution. The whole song is incoherent to the other 15 songs on the album that promotes good citizenship, civic engagement, love, parental responsibility and even stands against gendered double standards in Haitian society.
Women have been fighting sexual, physical and emotional violence as a systemic oppression rooted in cultural sexism, misogyny and patriarchy, oftentimes spread through popular music in Haiti. Actions to end gender based violence (GBV) and promote women empowerment are being realized through sisterhood, mentorship and association. They are effective way to help women cross those systemic barriers to achieve their potential and help build a society where they'll stop being discriminated and stereotyped on the sole basis of their sex and gender.
Musical groups and artists such as Koupe Klouwé, Méridional des Cayes and more from the younger generations have been spreading misogynistic and sexist ideas through their works for decades. It's time to stop this and help spreading musical works that do not discriminate or spread hateful contents.
