The Issue

Driving daily through Old Santa Maria Street, I've witnessed first-hand how the newly installed bike lane has negatively impacted traffic and safety for motorists. Tire blow outs, backed-up traffic, and various accidents are now a common sight. I personally have been caught in congestion caused by the lane's concrete barriers, which significantly obstruct larger vehicles like eighteen-wheelers and pose a serious hazard.

The bike lane was initially intended to promote environmentally friendly transportation and improve safety for cyclists. However, the current implementation has instead increased risks and congestion, especially affecting commercial traffic. According to recent traffic surveys, the lane has increased travel time by approximately 30% and led to an uptick in reported accidents along this stretch.

This congestion also hinders emergency vehicles from swiftly navigating the road, which could have dire consequences in emergency situations. Furthermore, local businesses dependent on timely deliveries are facing delays, affecting their operations and economic stability.

To resolve this, we request immediate removal of the bike lane or the restructuring of its design to ensure it does not impede regular traffic flow. Possible alternatives could include relocating the bike lane to a less trafficked area or implementing a separate cycling path parallel to existing vehicle lanes.

Addressing this issue promptly will not only restore efficient traffic flow but also enhance safety for all road users in Laredo, TX. Sign this petition if you believe in practical and safe road design for everyone.
