Remove Traffic Cash Grab (Stoney Trail - Scenic Acres Link)

The Issue

The undersigned members of the Tuscany and Scenic Acres communities, as well as frequent drivers of the area, respectfully request the removal of the existing set speed limit on the roadway leading from Stoney Trail to Scenic Acres Link.

We are deeply committed to ensuring the safety of our communities and acknowledge the importance of reasonable speed limits. However, we have observed that the current setup, which entails a reduction in speed from 100 km/h to 60 km/h and then to 40 km/h with motorists continuing onto Stoney Trail going 80 km/h, is primarily a revenue-generating mechanism for the Calgary Police. This is because they frequently set up speed traps, pull over motorists, and issue tickets with demerits in a zone with impractical speed limits.

In addition to the issue of ticketing, this arrangement has also led to several near-accidents due to the abrupt deceleration required, which is not typical of most ramps.

We believe that yellow speed signs would be more appropriate for this area, as they serve as suggestions for safe driving speeds in poor weather conditions. In inclement weather, a speed limit of 40 km/h may be appropriate; however, during normal driving conditions, this limit is unnecessarily low.

We recommend that law enforcement resources be redirected from this area towards more effective measures, such as increased monitoring of the numerous playground zones in our communities where drivers frequently exceed the speed limit by 20-30 km/h, placing our children at risk.

We urge the city council to promptly review this issue and replace the current speed limit with a standard yellow speed sign. Furthermore, we respectfully request that the city council review the allocation of resources for monitoring playground zones in our communities.
