Growing up in Elgin, Ive always appreciated that the city has not issued public content that is over sexualized. Yet, lately, my morning commute to school has been spoiled by the billboard on Route 31 advertising The ZZA Factory. Instead of enhancing the diversity of our city, it broadcasts provocative and misogynistic imagery that strips away the comfort and innocence from our streets. Not only that, the women are AI, sending a message that no woman will ever look like that. 

Every day, families drive by, instinctively shielding their children's eyes. This is a parental reflex to protect their kids from imagery that prioritizes consumption over respect. It sends damaging messages to young girls, suggesting their worth is measured by unrealistic standards of being thin that they’ll never live up to. This harms their self-esteem and personal growth, depicting unrealistic ideals as natural. Our young men, too, face pressure as they're bombarded with marketing that aggressively sexualizes content.

The presence of such a billboard isn't just an eyesore; it’s lazy marketing, and underscores a deeper issue of “how far is too far?” that plagues communities everywhere—how advertising, when unchecked, can erode communal values and self-worth. While some may dismiss this as overly sensitive, those affected know that each depiction and each hastily covered eye contributes to a broader culture that normalizes the over-sexualization of things that needn’t be sexualized.

What we seek isn't to close down the ZZA Factory. Rather, we call upon the business and our local government to recognize the influence of public signage and act responsibly for families, children, men and women in our communities. We urge the removal of this billboard, replacing it with something that truly promotes what it was intended to- the new thin crust pizza special.
