The Issue

We, the undersigned, are a community of dedicated users and paying subscribers of Google's Gemini Advanced. We are researchers, developers, students, and professionals who have integrated Gemini into our daily workflows, relying on it for learning, problem-solving, and creative endeavors. We chose Gemini for its power and, until recently, its accessibility.

However, we are writing to express our profound disappointment and frustration with the recent imposition of stringent usage limits on Gemini Advanced. This sudden and poorly communicated change feels like a betrayal of the trust we placed in Google.

Previously, the "Pro" (now "Advanced") tier offered what felt like near-unlimited access, fostering an environment of exploration and productivity. Now, with the introduction of a new, more expensive "Ultra" tier, the limits on Advanced have been drastically reduced to a level that severely hinders its utility for many power users.

This move appears to be a classic "bait-and-switch" tactic. By first offering a generous service and then severely restricting it upon the launch of a premium tier, Google is creating an artificial problem to push users towards a more expensive subscription. This is further compounded by what is known as the "anchoring effect"—while doubling the initial new limit from 50 to 100 messages per 24 hours may seem like an improvement, it is still a significant downgrade from the previous user experience.

The arguments that these limits are purely due to high computational costs are difficult to accept. Google, with its vast infrastructure, proprietary TPU hardware, and position as a leader in AI research, is uniquely positioned to handle these costs more efficiently than its competitors.

The current 24-hour "cooling-off" period is excessively long and impractical for users who rely on Gemini for their work and studies. A more reasonable approach, such as a shorter cooldown period of a few hours, would be far less disruptive.

As paying customers, we believe we have the right to a consistent and transparent service. We are not asking for a free lunch; we are asking for the fair service we subscribed to. We are your advocates and your most engaged users. Listening to our feedback is crucial for building a better product and a more loyal community.

We call on Google to:

1) Immediately and significantly increase the usage limits for all paying Gemini Advanced subscribers to a level that supports serious, professional use.
2) Drastically shorten the 24-hour cooldown period to allow users to resume their work without unreasonable delays.
3) Provide clear, transparent, and timely communication about any future changes to service tiers and usage limits.
4) Re-evaluate the value proposition of the Gemini Advanced tier. We subscribed for robust access to your powerful models, not to be constantly met with frustrating limitations.
5) We urge you to listen to your community and reconsider these restrictive measures. Do not alienate your most dedicated users. Restore the functionality that made us choose Gemini in the first place and work with us to build a sustainable and fair future for your AI services.
