The Issue

I am a student at Northern High in, and I am writing to express my deep concern about the presence of an anti-abortion club at our school. As a young woman navigating through my educational journey, I've always believed that school should be a safe space. A place where students from diverse backgrounds and beliefs can learn together without judgment or fear. However, the existence of this club has created a rift in our school community, making many of us feel uncomfortable and even excluded.

The topic of abortion is deeply personal and often controversial, especially among teenagers who are still forming their beliefs and opinions. It's important to remember that schools are meant to be environments where all students can feel safe and respected, without being confronted with divisive issues that can disrupt the learning environment. The presence of the club has not only drawn unwanted attention but also led to increased tensions and anxiety among students.

Moreover, numerous studies indicate the importance of keeping personal and controversial topics sensitive in educational settings. A survey conducted by the National Association of School Psychologists revealed that students perform better in environments where they feel accepted and supported. Introducing controversial topics prematurely can interfere with mental well-being and academic performance, which should be our primary focus.

While we value freedom of speech and the exchange of ideas, clubs that promote controversial stances such as anti-abortion can hinder open and supportive dialogue. Our debate clubs, and Political party clubs, are perfect to house critical thinking and open discussion, without alienating or offending students, or even teacher for that matter.

I believe our school has the responsibility to foster an atmosphere of inclusivity and educational growth. By removing the anti-abortion club, we are not infringing on freedom of expression but ensuring that our school remains a safe space for all.

I urge that our principal, and the school administration to reconsider the presence of this club in our school. Let's work towards creating a more harmonious educational environment—one that is supportive, unbiased, and welcoming to everyone. No matter your stance on this topic I'm sure you can understand why, this club, (and the fact its NHS affiliated) would make either side uncomfortable.

Please sign this petition to support the removal/change of the anti-abortion club from our school and help ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment for everyone.
