Remove the Sedivet allowance in NRHA’s new drug policy

The Issue

Recently, the NRHA has changed their rules in regards to their drug policy. They are now allowing the administration of the drug Sedivet (romifidine), a prescription sedative, to be administered to horses prior to competing. We, members of NRHA, fans of NRHA, owners, trainers, breeders, Veterinarians, etc., formally request that this allowance of Sedivet be revoked and removed from the NRHA drug policy. Allowing this drug to be used in competition increases the potential for injury to both horse and rider. From the NRHA judges guide, section 3: “To rein a horse is not only to guide him, but also to control his every movement. The best reined horse should be willingly guided or controlled with little or no apparent resistance and dictated to completely.” This is the goal, one that cannot rightfully be achieved when the horse is under the influence of mood altering pharmaceuticals. Allowing such drug usage in competition undermines the integrity and goals of the NRHA and as such needs to be stricken from the rulebook immediately.
