The Issue

For years, the quad at Valley Christian Junior High School has been a cherished space for my friends and me to gather, connect, and create countless memories. It was a place where laughter echoed, where friendships were strengthened, and where we could be ourselves. However, the recent installation of a pickleball court in the middle of the quad has drastically altered this beloved environment.

The space that once allowed us to hang out freely has been significantly reduced. The court's presence has constrained our ability to sit close together and relax comfortably. It's not just a matter of space; the very atmosphere has changed. Rogue pickleballs frequently pose safety hazards, unpredictably flying into areas where students are gathered, putting us at risk of injury.

Moreover, the once-peaceful setting is often disrupted by disputes among players concerning scores, which adds an unnecessary layer of tension and distress. This transformation has made the quad a place of contention rather than a sanctuary.

When my friends and I attempted to voice our concerns by peacefully protesting, we were met with the threat of disciplinary action by the Dean and school administration. I feel that this was unwarranted and a violation of our free speech and diminishment of the power teachers always say we have to make change.

I urge the Valley Christian Junior High School administration to reconsider the placement of the pickleball court. There are alternatives: relocating the court to an area better suited for sports, such as near the gym or on an athletic field, where its benefits can be maximized without impinging on the recreational needs of other students.

By removing the pickleball court from the quad, we can restore this vital space to its former glory—a safe, accommodating, and harmonious environment that supports the social and emotional well-being of all its students.
Please join me in safeguarding our school's community space by signing this petition. Together, we can make a positive change and reclaim the cherished character of our quad.
