Remove the NEW Black Fence Around Inverness Pond
The Issue
Inverness Pond has long been a cherished landmark for our community, representing both the beauty of nature and the heart of our local gatherings. It is where families get together, where neighbours meet up for a walk, and where people sit and enjoy the wildlife. The peace and tranquility it offers have been an integral part of our lives in this area.
Recently, a new black fence was installed around the pond, drastically altering its aesthetics. The fence is unattractive, detracts from the natural view, and changes the feel of a place where people come to relax and spend time together. While safety and property concerns are understandable, the current fencing solution seems excessive, and it doesn't reflect the community's desires nor does it respect the natural beauty of this local treasure.
The installation of such a barrier diminishes the enjoyment of the pond and has sparked discontent within our community. Many residents feel that this fence is unnecessary and would favour other ways of addressing any safety concerns without compromising on aesthetics.
We understand that the City has begun safety improvements at a number of storm ponds, and that the safety near water is a serious concern that we share. However, the City's announced program relies on signage and dense natural vegetation as well as fencing. We propose a more community-friendly solution: remove the current fencing entirely. Clear signage is enough to manage safety concerns responsibly while preserving the beauty of the pond. Engaging in meaningful dialogue with community members and re-evaluating whether any barrier is necessary can lead to a more inclusive approach.
We ask that the City:
- Provide the written rationale for fencing Inverness Pond, including the field observations and reports that led to its selection.
- Explain why signage and natural barriers alone are not sufficient at this pond.
- Confirm whether residents were consulted before installation, and if not, hold a public engagement session.
- Remove the fence and rely on signage and natural vegetation.
- If a physical barrier is kept, limit it to the areas where it is needed and allow residents to give input on its size, design, colour and placements.
Removing the fence would not only restore the pond to its former glory but would also demonstrate a commitment to valuing community input. We also ask that residents be consulted before any future changes are made to the pond area.
We urge the decision-makers to reconsider their approach and place the community's voice at the forefront of their priorities. Sign this petition to join us in asking for a thoughtful, community-oriented solution to this issue.
