Remove the Lead Now! Support 300 Sullivan Pl Tenant Assoc against IMK Management
The Issue
Isaac Heimovits of IMK Management , REMOVE the LEAD & MAKE REPAIRS NOW!
To: IMK Management: Isaac Heimovits, Lauren Lewis, Esq and Juan Delgado
This is to inform you that The 300 Sullivan Place Tenants Association has launched a national campaign to demand the immediate remediation of outstanding repairs and a building-wide removal of lead paint We are coordinating this campaign with the help of Equality for Flatbush (E4F) a Black Lives Matter organization that fights gentrification, displacement, and police violence in Brooklyn, NY.
Follow : #300SullivanPlace #IsaacHeimovits #LaurenLewis and #IMKManagement for pictures, videos, court documents generated by The 300 Sullivan Place Tenants Association highlighting the tenant harassment and poor living conditions that they currently endure.
The nationwide campaign showcases:
1. The volatile racially-motivated verbal abuse and the harassing letters by Isaac Heimovits and his attorney Lauren Lewis when tenants rightfully sought repairs and lead removal.
2. The discriminatory harassment and written threats of evictions of Black and Latinx people, women, women with children, and elderly tenants by Isaac Heimovits and Lauren Lewis.
3. Despite the well-documented negative attributes of being exposed to lead paint, IMK Management willfully continue to put Black and Latinx children and elders at risk for respiratory and cognitive health-related trauma
4. Multiple tenants of all nationalities report that rent checks have been altered and/ or returned, resulting in them being taken to court by IMK Management for non-payment . Tenants who are currently in legal proceedings with IMK Management, report continuously not receiving court documents mailed to 300 Sullivan Place. IMK Management also refuses to create a secured area for packages deliveries despite multiple complaints of theft by tenants.
In E4F's 10-year experience, countless tenants across NYC have reported similar experiences, tactics and harassment by landlords in order to displace especially Black and Brown tenants .
The 300 Sullivan Place Tenants Association Demands that IMK Management and its representatives:
A. Cease and desist demanding access to tenants’ apartments when tenants have explicitly said they are unavailable.
B. Cease and desist all forms of intimidation and harassment such as,
- Refusing to honor tenants dates and times of availability for repairs
- Excessive and aggressive correspondence from IMK Management's attorney Lauren Lewis
- Threatening to evict tenants verbally and in writing because they are not available on dates for repairs generated by IMK Management
- Out-rightly denying repairs and lead removal to tenants which is against NYS Housing Law
- Showing up unannounced to tenants’ homes demanding access. By NYS Housing Law, tenants have the right to propose days and times that are convenient for them to allow access for repairs. Tenants must be given 24-48 hours notice on an agreed-upon date and time before representatives of IMK Management can enter their apartments. Only in cases of extreme emergencies can representatives of IMK request 24 hours notice for entry
C. All tenants who must relocate for lead paint abatement and other health-hazardous repairs must be compensated $2,000 for accommodations, travel, food, and supplies for the 1st week. If repairs or lead removal takes over 1 week, tenants will be compensated $450/day. No tenant must be forced to pay out of pocket with the promise of reimbursement. All payments must be done upfront by check.
D. All lead repairs must be conducted by an EPA Lead Certified Company with lead abatement-certified workers and follow the EPA protocol as listed here.
Consequences for our demands not being met:
1. The 300 Sullivan Place Tenants Association will report IMK Management for the current dangerous conditions on a daily basis to the City of New York until the lead is removed and the repairs are completed.
2. The 300 Sullivan Place Tenants Association, Equality for Flatbush, and our supporters will call press conferences and rallies to expose the current dangerously unlivable conditions as well as the racial, gender-based, and ageist harassment tenants have endured at the hands of IMK Management to make sure our demands are met.
3. The 300 Sullivan Place Tenants Association, Equality for Flatbush, and our supporters will pack the courtroom and call press conferences for all tenants facing eviction by IMK Management.
4. Equality for Flatbush will secure the most highly skilled housing attorneys in NYC for 300 Sullivan Place Tenants Association to bring lawsuits for repairs and against tenant harassment.
Signed,
300 Sullivan Pl Tenants Association
