This monument symbolizes an individual who conducted surgical experiments on enslaved women, who could not possibly give their informed consent, propagating both racism and misogyny. Sims' actions were unethical and his memorial glorifies those actions, standing as a constant reminder of the horrifying past. It is time for us to acknowledge this grim history, not by glorifying the perpetrators, but by recognizing the victims and ensuring such acts are never repeated. Historical records document the sufferings these enslaved women endured for Sims' medical advancements. While we understand the significance of historical memory, it is essential that we shift our focus towards fostering an environment that respects and honors the humanity of all individuals, instead of celebrating a man who violated basic human rights. This memorial being displayed prominently is not the visual message we should be sending in our fight to promote equality and justice for all. Please join me in urging the authorities to remove the J. Marion Sims memorial at the South Carolina Statehouse.
