Remove the "Illegal Aliens Here" Sign from Butler County Jail

The Issue

Our community is one built on love, understanding, and respect for the dignity of all persons. We take pride in the inclusive nature of our community, one that does not discriminate, but embraces all its citizens. However, a symbol of discord, division, and prejudice persists in our community - the disparaging "illegal aliens here" sign displayed at the Butler County jail.

In the United States, immigrants make up 13.7% of our population (Pew Research Center, 2019). Are these not our neighbors, our friends, our coworkers, and, indeed, our family members? They enrich our community with cultural diversity, adding to the fabric of our society. Yet, signs like these serve only to dehumanize, alienate, and belittle their contributions.

Labeling human beings as "aliens" strips them of their individuality, their humanity. It creates an us-versus-them dichotomy that does not reflect the unity our community stands for. Furthermore, it sets a precedent for this kind of harmful and degrading language, leading to less respect and more divisive treatment.

It is time to stand up against hate, intolerance, and fear. It is time to demand the removal of the "illegal aliens here" sign from the Butler County jail.

We urge the relevant authorities to respect the dignity of all human beings, remove the offensive sign at the Butler County jail, and uphold the true values of our community. Please sign this petition to show your support for the equal and respectful treatment of every individual, thereby preserving the unity, love, and inclusivity our community stands for.

The Change.org Decision Maker Team reached out to the Butler County Sheriff's office. Our team makes sure petitions like this one are seen by the right decision maker and to help encourage engagement with supporters like you. Here is what was elevated by an official in the Sheriff's office: When the Sheriff discovered there was a petition opposing the sign—a petition each of you have signed in support—he wanted to hear from you. He means it when he says he wants to be fair and give people who disagree a voice. That is why he shared this petition. Sheriff Jones believes it's important that we are able to discuss where we disagree. This doesn't mean we will always see eye to eye or that this petition will change Sheriff Jone's mind. What it does mean is he has heard your concerns, tracking the community's thoughts on the issues, and always keeping an open mind. Thank you
