​We, the residents, neighbors, and allies of Jackson County, Florida, demand the immediate removal of all public names, monuments, symbols, and honors dedicated to Andrew Jackson.

​Our community deserves public spaces that reflect modern values of justice, equality, and human dignity. Maintaining honors for a historical figure defined by violent white supremacy and state-sponsored ethnic cleansing directly contradicts those values.

​Andrew Jackson’s legacy is undeniably built on racial violence and systemic oppression:

• ​The Florida Campaigns and the Destruction of Sanctuary: As a military general, Jackson led aggressive incursions into Florida—violating Spanish sovereignty—with the explicit intent of destroying safe havens for Black freedom seekers and Indigenous peoples. This included orchestrating the destruction of the "Negro Fort" on the Apalachicola River and launching the First Seminole War, which terrorized local populations, dismantled multi-ethnic communities of freedom seekers and tribal members, and paved the way for territorial conquest.
   
• ​The Trail of Tears: As president, Jackson signed the Indian Removal Act of 1830, initiating the forced, brutal relocation of tens of thousands of Native Americans. This act of ethnic cleansing resulted in thousands of preventable deaths from starvation, exposure, and disease.
   
• ​Large-Scale Enslavement and Profiteering: Jackson was a wealthy slaveholder and active slave trader who bought, sold, and brutalized over 150 Black people on his "Hermitage" plantation. Throughout his political career, he fiercely defended the institution of chattel slavery and actively combated early abolitionist movements.

​By continuing to use his name and likeness to represent our county's identity, our local leadership sends a clear message that the lives and histories of Indigenous and Black people are secondary to the preservation of white supremacist icons.

​We refuse to let systemic racism be a passive fixture in our public spaces. We demand that the Board of County Commissioners take immediate, transparent steps to:

1. ​Form a Public Review Committee tasked with inventorying all county-owned assets, properties, roads, and symbols bearing Andrew Jackson’s name.
2. ​Initiate a Rapid Renaming and Removal Process for all identified public markers, replacing them with designations that honor the true history, diversity, and collective future of Jackson County.
3. ​Engage Directly with Affected Communities, including regional tribal nations and local civil rights organizations, to ensure the transition process honors truth, reconciliation, and historical accountability.
