Remove the fence at Highlands Skatepark
The Issue
This skatepark has been more than just a recreational area; it's been a vibrant community hub where friendships are forged, skills are honed, and a sense of freedom is embraced by all who come with a board, bike, or scooter. However, the fence around this beloved skatepark is not only constraining this freedom but also unintentionally creating hazardous conditions.
Numerous reports and firsthand experiences have highlighted how the fence has compromised safety. Riders who attempt to perform tricks often find themselves with limited space for safe landings, increasing the risk of injuries. The lack of easy ingress and egress points means that in cases of emergencies, whether it's a medical incident or otherwise, assistance may be delayed due to restricted access.
Beyond safety, the fence has inadvertently diminished the inclusivity of the park. By its very nature, the fence creates a barrier—not just physically but socially—deterring younger kids, families, and other community members who would otherwise feel welcome in an open and inviting space.
The presence of the fence also flies in the face of fostering skill development and community growth. Studies have shown that accessibility in public spaces is key to encouraging physical activity among youth—a critical component in combating rising health issues such as obesity and mental health challenges. A move towards removing the fence would be in alignment with broader community health goals and urban planning principles that promote open, accessible parks.
We propose the removal of this fence as a simple yet powerful step towards providing spirit to this skatepark. We envision an open space free of physical and psychological barriers, a place where everyone feels welcome and safe while enjoying their time.
We call upon our city council and relevant authorities to hear our plea and prioritize open spaces for the community. Let us restore this skatepark back to being the safe and inclusive haven it once was. Please sign this petition to help us bring this change and make a positive impact on our community.
