Remove the Felony Disclosure Requirement from Employment Applications

Remove the Felony Disclosure Requirement from Employment Applications
The Issue
As a previously incarcerated woman, I struggled with the barriers that our society places in the professional field for individuals with a criminal record. The stigma, marginalization, and discrimination are all too real, and it is crucial that we raise awareness and push for change. It is a painful reality for many, that we are continuously penalized for our past mistakes, which impedes our ability to reintegrate into society and become productive citizens. The irony is particularly striking when we consider that even persons with multiple recent convictions, like former President Trump, can maintain high-profile positions, while others who have served their time and seek regular employment are denied opportunities. We need change at all levels of government as this barrier prevents formerly incarcerated men and women from seeking certifications, housing, as well as other resources, especially in minority communities. This disparity highlights the injustice in our legal and societal treatment of felons. According to the National Institute of Justice, an estimated 70 million Americans have a criminal record which makes finding employment significantly more difficult. It's high time that we advocate for legislative advancements to eliminate the requirement for felon disclosure on both federal and state job applications. By dismantling this barrier, we create a fairer society that offers opportunities for those who have paid their dues. It's time to bring drastic changes - let's support those who want to rebuild their lives, not further punish them based on their past. Please, sign the petition.
