Today marks a day of profound disappointment and outrage as it was revealed that the former DUP leader Jeffrey Donaldson has been convicted of 18 historical sex abuse offences. In light of these grievous crimes, he has been remanded to the high-security Maghaberry prison and will face sentencing in September. His wife, Elenor, was found liable on five counts of aiding and abetting these heinous acts. However, due to her mental health, she will not receive a custodial sentence.

The Donaldsons' titles of knighthood represent a status and honour that should be reserved for individuals of impeccable character and contributions to society. The continued honouring of the Donaldsons with knighthoods is a vulgar insult to the victims, survivors, and society at large who look up to these honours for inspiration and reassurance.

Revoking their knighthoods is not only justified but necessary to restore integrity to the honours system. It is crucial that society send a clear message: that we do not, and will not, honour those who have been convicted of such appalling and damaging crimes. The symbols of knighthood should not be tainted by those who breach society's trust.

I urge the Honours Forfeiture Committee and those able to influence these decisions to act decisively and immediately. The time to act is now. We must remove the Donaldsons' knighthoods at once to prevent further disgrace and uphold the prestigiousness of our honours.
