For some reason, even though the City of Mobile moved away from any official use of the divisive insignia NINE years ago- The Mobile Police Department continues to wear the confederate flag as part of their uniform in both the patches on their shoulders and on their badges. To make matters worse in 2020, following the killing of George Floyd, the police chief at the time, Lawrence Battiste, said that the department would be redesigning the patches to remove the confederate flag. No mention of removing the flag from the badge, and the promise of a redesign to remove the flag from their shoulder patches was a LIE. The patches were redesigned but done so to make the confederate flag more inconspicuous and harder to recognize rather than removed.

I think it is important in order to build any relationship between a community and a police department, that the people of the community feel that they can trust the police, and in order to have that trust they must be true to their word and they must be held accountable when they are not. I don't believe the Mobile police truly work "with respect for everyone" as they claim when they have such a historically hateful and racist flag repeatedly through their uniform and went through the extra effort of trying to hide it rather than remove it like they said they would more than FOUR YEARS AGO!

This petition is to show the Mobile Police Department that we the people will hold them accountable and we won't accept them lying to us and trying to fool us. As a department that claims to "serve and protect" I find it ironic that not only do they wear a flag that has historically been used for the hate, belittlement, and terrorization of a race of people that makes up the majority of the city, but they also went through such efforts to hide it and keep it in their uniforms.
