Remove the Animated Show "Good Times" from Netflix for Misrepresentation

The Issue

As a Black American, I have witnessed the long history of our fight for equal rights and against racial discrimination. It is disheartening to see that in this day and age, we still face misrepresentation in media. One such instance is the animated show “Good Times” on Netflix. This show harms the self-image and esteem of Black American culture in the United States by perpetuating a false narrative of criminality and lack of economic progress.

The majority of Black lives are not accurately portrayed in this animation, fostering continued hatred and bigotry towards us as citizens. The trailer does not reflect any positive message from its predecessor show “Good Times”. Instead, it continues to feed into stereotypes that have been proven false time and again.

According to a study by Color Of Change Hollywood (2017), 78% of stories featuring Black families were about crime which does not represent our community accurately or fairly. We need media representation that uplifts us rather than degrades us.

We urge Netflix to remove “Good Times” from their platform until it can provide an accurate portrayal of Black American life without resorting to harmful stereotypes or narratives. Please sign this petition if you believe in fair representation for all cultures on all platforms.
