Every year, thousands of students across India dedicate countless hours to prepare for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, with aspirations of entering the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). However, a significant number of these hardworking students are hindered by a barrier that seems both arbitrary and unfair: the 75% board examination eligibility criterion.

As someone who has personally experienced the detrimental impact of this criterion, I can attest to the anxiety and pressure it puts on students, who are already burdened with immense academic and emotional stress. Imagine putting your heart and soul into preparing for one of the toughest engineering entrance exams, only to be told that your efforts are futile because of a narrow parameter that doesn't holistically reflect your abilities and potential.

The 75% criterion largely overlooks the varied grading standards and educational inequities present across different boards and regions in India. For instance, a student from a rural school with limited resources may struggle to meet this percentage, even if their understanding and application of concepts are brilliant. Furthermore, certain boards notoriously evaluate more stringently than others, creating an involuntary disadvantage for students who aim for the same educational opportunities.

Academic excellence should not be measured by board results alone, especially when students have demonstrated their capability and commitment through the highly competitive JEE Main exam. Educational policies must evolve to focus more on fostering potential rather than imposing rigid eligibility bars that hinder access to higher education.

I urge the Ministry of Education and the Joint Admission Board (JAB) to reconsider and remove this 75% board eligibility criterion for JEE Advanced admissions. By doing so, we can ensure a fairer and more inclusive examination system that values all students' dedication and passion for engineering.
