Remove Superintendent Dr. Chavez and school board members in Brownsville, TX

The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the leadership of the Brownsville Independent School District (BISD), and I am urging the community to take a stand. The current Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Jesus Chavez, along with Board President Daniela Lopez-Valdez and Board Members Denise Garza and Jessica G. Gonzalez, have eroded the trust and confidence of our community. They have demonstrated a consistent pattern of dishonesty and mismanagement, most notably exemplified by the recent $460 million bond election that failed spectacularly.

During the bond campaign, these leaders misled the community with promises of no tax increases and false claims about never having planned a performing arts center previously. Their actions were not just misleading; they bordered on deceit. Moreover, there have been allegations of illegal activities that they are trying to cover up, which add another layer to the mistrust. BISD has been in need of a forensic audit and in a recent board meeting, it was finally revealed that this district and board DID NOT BUDGET FOR THE FORENSIC AUDIT THAT WAS ALREADY APPROVED! Yet, Jessica Gonzalez feels that there is no need to pay for any kind of audit. They have been dodging this audit because they know that the community will find out what happened to the $50 million dollars that was intended for the PAC, the ESSER Funds, the COVID funds, the large sum of money that Elon Musk donated and more!

Also, it has come to light that this board has been engaging in some illegal activity regarding electioneering, illegal appointments, major conflict of interests and severe mismanagement of funds.

Dr. Chavez Failure

Since the failure of the bond, all of the individuals named, especially Dr. Chavez, have taken to the local news media to gaslight the community and blame us for any accidents that happen due to their lack of fund management for repairs. As Dr. Chavez stated "So, we’ll see what the community wants down the road. For me, it’s a situation where they the community, they the parents, are the ones that need to give some thought as to when do you want to do it” and “Parents are going to call. The community’s going to be concerned about it. Well, the community didn’t approve replacing air conditioning. It didn’t get approved. It got turned down. So, we’re going to continue to have those issues that we identified. But, we’ve got to follow what the community wants. With their vote, they decided not to move forward with these fixes that the schools need,”

This is not about political differences; it's about integrity and accountability. The future of our children’s education and our community’s wellbeing are at stake. With these leaders at the helm, our trust has been shattered, and it is time for a change. We deserve leaders who are transparent, ethical, and who genuinely care about the future of our schools. They claim that they want the best for BISD but yet, they are spending almost $1 million dollars on a vendor when there is no money. That money could have gone to much needed repairs that is needed throughout the district.

In order to restore trust and ensure a better future for our children, we call for the immediate removal of Dr. Jesus Chavez, Daniela Lopez-Valdez, Denise Garza, and Jessica G. Gonzalez from their positions. Our community needs to be represented by individuals who serve with honesty, integrity, and dedication. How can we as a community "Believe in BISD" when these four individuals don't even believe in it themselves!? How can we as a community respect the school board with the superintendent doesn't respect the organization himself (by allowing shouting matches between the majority and two minority parties and not to mention, allowing the board secretary to insult board members)?

Please join me in signing this petition to demand accountability and change in the leadership of Brownsville's schools. It's time we stand up for a brighter, more trustworthy future for our children and our community. Your support is crucial in making our voices heard and instigating the change Brownsville desperately needs.
