The Issue

My beloved pet, a cherished member of my family, was brutally taken away from me. My dog was kicked to death, and the perpetrator tried to hide the crime by having her cremated before I could even say goodbye. I was trapped in silence for years, a victim of abuse, unable to seek justice due to fear and intimidation. When I finally found the courage to speak out, I was told that the statute of limitations had expired, leaving me with no legal recourse.

This heartbreaking experience is not unique. Many pet owners in Michigan have suffered similar losses and find themselves unable to report the crime of pet murder once the six-year statute of limitations has passed. Pets are more than just animals; they are our companions, family members, and offer unconditional love. The loss of a pet in such a violent way leaves emotional and psychological scars that last a lifetime.

Our current laws in Michigan do not reflect the seriousness of this crime. The murder of a pet should never be dismissed simply because time has passed. We must ensure that victims can come forward whenever they find the strength without the fear of legal technicalities hindering justice.

By removing the statute of limitations for pet murder, Michigan can set a precedent that says not only are our beloved animals protected by law, but that justice is not constrained by time. This change would provide victims and their families with peace of mind and the opportunity to seek justice, whenever they are ready. Furthermore, it would deter potential offenders, knowing that they are accountable for their actions indefinitely.

I urge the Michigan legislators to take action and amend the law to reflect the emotional bond between humans and animals and recognize the need for justice that transcends time. Together, we can protect our pets and show that their lives matter.

Please join me in this fight for justice and help change the law. Sign this petition to urge Michigan lawmakers to eliminate the statute of limitations on pet murder and ensure justice for all victims, past and present. Your signature can make a difference in the lives of pet owners and restore peace in their hearts.
