The Issue

As a deeply personal issue, I find the current situation concerning. George Floyd's death catalyzed worldwide protests and discussions regarding police brutality and racial discrimination. However, his death being attributed in part to a drug overdose has raised questions on the appropriateness of his commemoration through statues.

This is not a campaign against George Floyd as an individual, but rather against the misrepresentation that these statues might promote. The Hennepin County medical examiner's autopsy report stated that Floyd had fentanyl and methamphetamine in his system when he died, suggesting a drug overdose (source: BBC) alongside the brutal act of the police.

Statues are a powerful symbol, typically constructed for heroes, influencers, and persons with indisputable character. Arguably, erecting statues for individuals with complex and controversial histories can send mixed messages to our society, particularly to our youth.

This petition aims to raise awareness of these complexities and encourage our communities and local governments to reflect more deeply on the message they wish to convey through public monuments. Understanding all aspects of this matter, the decision to remove George Floyd's statues should be made considering the values that we, as a society, want to promote.

Please sign this petition if you agree that we need to remove George Floyd's statues and put up statues of American Heroes.
