338 local residents have expressed their wishes for Squamish Tent City to be ripped down, but no action has been taken to date by District of Squamish to enforce its three byalws:
- Camping bylaw
- Wildlife Attractant bylaw
- Unsightliness bylaw
We can add a 4th bylaw now that the squatters are actively breaking with no enforcement from the District: The Fire Services Bylaw 2751 - it appears that District bylaws apply to property tax residents and law abiding citizens, but they do not apply to squatters setting up camp on the banks of the estuary.
The problem with fires is that BC is on course to endure its worst drought year in decades with an elevated fire risk to our community. But is it ok to breach our fire safety bylaws if you are squatting amongst our trees and estuary environment?
