Remove smartphones from Haverford School District

The Issue

To: Haverford School Board and Administration
We, the undersigned parents and community members urge you to enforce a policy that prohibits the use of smartphones within all school premises in the district from elementary through high school. Our request is founded on the following key reasons:

  1. Distraction from Learning: Smartphones are a significant source of distraction. With constant notifications from social media, games, and messaging apps, students find it challenging to concentrate on their studies. It also makes puts added burden on the teachers as they have to compete with phones for the attention of their students. Eliminating smartphones in classrooms will help students focus better on their academic activities.
  2. Negative Impact on Mental Health: There are numerous studies detailing that smartphone use in children has been directly  linked to higher prevalence of anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. By removing these devices from the school environment, we can create a more supportive and less stressful atmosphere for our students.
  3. Encouraging Face-to-Face Interaction: School is a place for social development and interaction. The presence of smartphones discourages students from engaging in meaningful face-to-face communication with their peers and teachers. Eliminating smartphones will foster a more connected and communicative school community.
  4. Reducing Cyberbullying: Cyberbullying is a growing concern in schools, exacerbated by the constant access to smartphones. By restricting smartphone usage, we can significantly reduce instances of online harassment and create a safer environment for all students.
  5. Improving Academic Performance: Studies have shown that students without access to smartphones during school hours perform better academically. Without the constant distraction of their phones, students can dedicate more time and attention to their studies.
  6. Promoting Healthy Habits: Limiting smartphone use can help students develop healthier habits, such as increased physical activity and better sleep patterns. Encouraging students to engage in non-digital activities during breaks can lead to a more balanced lifestyle.
  7. Providing a More Equitable Environment: Many parents choose to wait to introduce smartphones into their children’s lives, whether for mental health reasons of financial ones. Allowing and encouraging smartphone usage in school negatively affects those families. It opens doors to bullying and puts unnecessary pressure on parents to conform to allowing smartphones for their children so they will “fit in.” Removing them from the schools removes this burden and puts all families on equal ground.

We understand that smartphones can be useful tools for learning and emergency communication. However, the detrimental effects of their unrestricted use during school hours outweigh the benefits. We propose the following measures to ensure that smartphones do not interfere with the educational environment:

  1. Designated Haverford Schools as Phone-Free Zones: Establish processes for kids to surrender their phones upon entering the school and retrieving their phones upon exiting.
  2. Emergency Access: Ensure that students can access their phones in case of emergencies, with clear guidelines on what constitutes an emergency.
  3. Alternative Communication Methods: Provide students with alternative ways to communicate with their parents or guardians during school hours, such as through the school office.

We believe that implementing these measures will greatly benefit our students’ academic performance, mental health, and overall well-being. We urge the school board/administration to take action to keep smartphones out of our schools and create a more conducive learning environment for our children.
