Remove restrictive internet blocking in McKinney ISD
The Issue
I can’t count the number of times I’ve faced impossible hurdles trying to access information that I need for my schoolwork because McKinney Independent School District (ISD) implements excessive internet filtering. This issue is personal to me and many other students who are simply trying to make the most out of our educational experience.
Educational technology is an integral part of learning in the 21st century, giving students access to a wealth of resources that can enhance our education. Unfortunately, while intended to protect us from harmful online content, the current blocking systems are overly restrictive and hinder our ability to conduct research, collaborate on projects, and even access certain websites required for assignments.
In October 2022, the American Library Association reported that 98% of public school districts use internet filtering, yet it's crucial that these systems strike a balance between safety and accessibility. Several studies indicate that excessive filtering can negatively impact learning by preventing students from accessing valuable educational content. Numerous districts around the country have successfully adjusted their filtering parameters to better reflect educational needs and ensure safety without stifling learning.
It's understandable that McKinney ISD is concerned about the safety of its students online. However, there are more efficient solutions that provide both safety and the freedom necessary for a comprehensive education. Solutions could include implementing a tiered filtering system that evaluates content based on age appropriateness, or involving educators in the decision-making process when determining which sites should be blocked.
Most importantly, students like me should have a feedback mechanism to report issues with blocked sites so they can be swiftly addressed. This ensures that our learning isn’t disrupted and that we can access the necessary tools to succeed academically.
By signing this petition, you are urging McKinney ISD to re-evaluate and adjust its current internet filtering system to facilitate a balanced approach—one that protects students yet allows us the freedom to fully engage with educational resources. Let's make sure that our schools are environments conducive to learning and growth, not limitations. Please sign this petition and support a change for better educational access for all students in McKinney ISD.
