Remove requirement for advisors from Oregon school law
The Issue
One of the most influential figures during my school years was not an advisor but a teacher who helped me navigate my educational path with genuine interest and personal guidance. Unfortunately, our current system mandates advisors whose roles often overlap with those of teachers, creating redundancy and stretching resources thin. This is why I'm calling for the removal of the advisor requirement from Oregon state law in schools.
The law insists on having advisors, who are meant to guide students through academic requirements and personal development. While the intent is noble, in practice, these positions can be ineffective. Many students in Oregon have far more impactful and meaningful relationships with their teachers or counselors, who are already equipped and passionate about offering guidance without an official "advisor" label.
Budget constraints have already impacted our schools; the redundancy of having separate advisors adds unnecessary stress to the system. According to Education Week, Oregon schools face significant funding challenges, and the National Center for Education Statistics shows that administrative costs are rising. By reallocating resources away from mandated advisor roles and back into hiring teachers or enhancing facilities, schools can directly improve the educational experience.
Teachers have continually shown they are more than capable of guiding students. A 2018 survey by the Teaching Association found that 74% of teachers feel confident in advising and mentoring students. This statistic suggests a holistic role for teachers would be welcomed and effective.
We propose that rather than enforcing a separate advisory system, schools should empower current staff, such as teachers and counselors, to offer the personal and academic guidance students require. With proper training and support, they can fulfill these advisory roles naturally and effectively.
Help us by signing this petition to urge the Oregon State Legislature to reevaluate the necessity of advisory roles and allow schools to allocate resources where they will make the most impact: directly in the classrooms and educational support staff. By doing so, we can strengthen the bonds between teachers and students and build a more efficient and effective educational environment.
Stand with me in ensuring our educational resources are used where they truly benefit students. Sign this petition and let’s make a change for the betterment of our Oregon schools.
