Remove & Relocate Rainbow Crosswalks in Key West, FL

The Issue

As a law-abiding citizen,  I am deeply concerned about the illegal rainbow crosswalks on Duval & Petronia Street.  They do not comply with the Florida Department of Transportation's (FDOT) guidelines. The FDOT's June 30, 2025 memo & the August 15, 2025 letter to Key West mandates the removal of any non-standard pavement markings to ensure that our streets and highways adhere to safety standards. The rainbow crosswalks, while visually appealing to some, do not serve a traffic control purpose as required by law. Compliance with standardized markings ensures safety for everybody by giving clear and consistent signals on our roads.  I do not want city funds wasted if the city were sued by anybody harmed by the reduced safety caused by rainbow crosswalks. I also support following state law, Senate Bill 1662, to ensure the city does not lose funding from the FDOT. I don’t want tax dollars wasted on unnecessary legal battles against state laws, that most citizens support anyway. After removal of these crosswalks, I fully support designating other locations in Key West, where all groups may request permission to display artwork, symbols, signage, statues, or any other display promoting their group’s cause. This petition is not a stance against the First Amendment right to freedom of expression or against any specific group. It is simply a call to prioritize safety and legality on the streets of Key West. By enforcing the FDOT's requirements and adhering to Senate Bill 1662, the City Commission & Mayor can guarantee that roads are safe, that state funding is protected, and that tax dollars are used wisely.  I sign this petition to urge the compliance with the law.
