My journey in the library field has been both challenging and frustrating due to systemic issues in the Virgin Islands. I was hired as a library associate and encouraged to pursue a library degree, only to be wrongfully terminated when I took the necessary steps to obtain it. The library degree I pursued required practical experience under a degreed library director, a leadership position that is significantly lacking in the Virgin Islands. Consequently, I had to leave my home to fulfill this requirement, which ironically led to my termination on accounts of 'job abandonment.' This cycle of unrealistic expectations must end.

Our public libraries, museums, and archives are cultural treasures that deserve to be managed by qualified professionals. Unfortunately, these entities fall under the Department of Natural Resources, neglecting their cultural significance and professional needs. The Virgin Islands lacks degreed library directors and librarians, stalling the potential growth of both library services and aspiring professionals. The lack of qualified library directors hinders proper mentorship and professional development for those intent on growing in this field.

Requiring all library directors and librarians to have or obtain a Master of Library Science (MLS) or Master of Information and Library Science (MILS) within a year of appointment is crucial. This requirement will not only elevate the library profession in the Virgin Islands but also ensure that our cultural institutions are led with the expertise they deserve.

Removing public libraries, museums, and archives from the oversight of the Department of Natural Resources is also vital. These institutions should instead fall under a department that recognizes and prioritizes cultural enrichment and education. Only then can we ensure that those leading our libraries are well-equipped to serve the community effectively.
