Remove Principal Trent Nickerson from Nimitz High School and Irving ISD

Remove Principal Trent Nickerson from Nimitz High School and Irving ISD
The Issue
I am a dedicated member and former photography teacher of the Nimitz High School community, and I write to you today from a place of deep concern and urgency. Since the 2024-2025 school year, our school has been under the leadership of Principal Trent Nickerson, whose actions and behavior have not only been disrespectful towards students, parents, and teachers but have also fostered a hostile work environment that is stifling growth and harmony while decreasing student enrollment.
Personally, I've experienced his attempts to isolate me from collaborating with my peers. My intentions were pure; I sought to rebuild our school culture, reduce teen isolation, and boost school enrollment through a special photography project meant to make meaningful connections amongst everyone on campus. Yet, instead of support, I faced unnecessary resistance and hostility. I filed a grievance and emailed a letter to Superintendent Magda Hernandez with multiple documented hostile exchanges and a transcript of the meeting where Nickerson created a rule to forbid me from emailing teachers without his approval. I still have yet to receive a response of any sort from the superintendent.
My photography class enrollment increased over 340% in one year. From 38 students last year to over 160 this year. I humbly say my class was a success with growing interest. I had answers to the school’s enrollment problem but was threatened with a psychological evaluation to measure my mental state after filing a grievance with the district for Nickerson’s behavior. I could see how that scenario would play out so I opted to resign.
Under Nickerson's leadership, the morale of the school community has plummeted. According to feedback from students and staff, his leadership style is not just unsupportive; it is obstructive. With one student claiming he dropped out of school solely due to Nickerson.
One parent’s review from last year on a school rating website states “The new principal, Mr. Nickerson, is on a power trip and insults both students and teachers. He does not respect the students or parents.”
Teachers report feeling undervalued and constantly on edge, while students are feeling overlooked and unheard. These sentiments are not conducive to a thriving educational environment.
It is a well-documented fact that toxic work environments can lead to increased stress and decreased performance among students and teachers alike. Statistics show that schools with positive leadership tend to have higher enrollment rates and better student outcomes. For instance, a study by the National Center for Education Statistics found that schools with supportive administrative leadership see up to a 10% increase in student performance within a year. As members of the Irving Independent School District, it is imperative that we hold our leaders accountable and demand better for our children and educators.
Our actionable request is clear: We call upon the administration of Irving ISD to remove Trent Nickerson from not only Nimitz High School but Irving ISD. We request appointing new leadership at Nimitz High School. Our teachers, students, and community deserve an environment where they are respected, empowered, and inspired.
Together, we can make Nimitz High School a beacon of positivity and success once more. Please sign this petition to remove Principal Trent Nickerson from our school and bring about necessary change for our school and community.
