As of now, 19 people have signed, lending their voices to our call for accountability. These signatures are vital—because today, peaceful protest across the nation is increasingly met with aggressive government action.
On June 6, ICE conducted coordinated raids across Los Angeles, arresting over 100 individuals in areas like the Fashion District and outside a Home Depot. In response, peaceful protesters took to the streets—shutting down the 101 Freeway and gathering around City Hall. Despite their nonviolent presence, police declared unlawful assemblies and began making arrests.
Then, on June 8, President Trump bypassed California Governor Gavin Newsom and ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 active-duty Marines into Los Angeles—marking the first such federal military action in a U.S. city without a governor’s consent since the 1960s. Critics swiftly pointed out the legal and constitutional issues, citing violations of the Tenth Amendment and the Posse Comitatus Act, which limits the use of federal military forces in domestic law enforcement.
California officials responded immediately. On June 12, U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer issued a temporary restraining order, halting the federal deployment and stating clearly that peaceful protests do not justify the use of military force. Though the ruling was quickly challenged by the federal government, it marked a key legal pushback against the administration’s growing executive overreach.
While these tensions continue in the streets, President Trump has been advancing a controversial agenda in Washington. He recently pushed forward the “One Big Beautiful Bill” (BBB)—a sweeping immigration and enforcement package that includes expanded deportations, funding for 3,000 new ICE and Border Patrol agents, and increased detention infrastructure. Trump has used the unrest in Los Angeles as political leverage, warning lawmakers that rejecting the bill is siding with “chaos.”
At the same time, he signed a measure to overturn California’s 2035 ban on new gas-powered vehicle sales—undermining one of the most ambitious climate policies in the U.S.—and framed it as a move to “protect American freedom.” Environmental advocates and California officials condemned the decision, citing the growing threat of climate change and the federal government’s encroachment on state authority.
Even more troubling, Trump’s budget proposal includes cuts to Medicaid, rural hospitals, public broadcasting (NPR/PBS), and sanctuary city funding, all while expanding federal law enforcement powers and immigration detention budgets.
These actions aren’t random—they reveal a coordinated power grab, both on the ground and in policy. Peaceful protesters are being treated like enemies, while legislation is being passed to silence, surveil, and detain. Meanwhile, environmental protections and social safety nets are being stripped away—all under the guise of “order.”
That’s why this petition matters. It’s not just about one protest or one city—it’s about the future of civil liberties, democratic accountability, and the right to resist.
