Remove peanuts from school menus in Douglas County, Colorado

Remove peanuts from school menus in Douglas County, Colorado
The Issue
Our children are highly allergic to peanuts, and are among the staggering 40% of children who experience anaphylactic shock if they consume peanuts. This reaction is not just a minor inconvenience; it is life-threatening and requires immediate medical intervention. The risk is particularly concerning in Douglas County, Colorado, where, without prior consultation with school nurses, peanuts were introduced into the school menu as of November 2025. This decision overlooks the fact that peanut allergy is currently the most common allergen among individuals under the age of 18 (source: foodallergy.org).
In conversations so far with the county's nutrition team, we have heard these answers (none of which include removing peanuts from the menu):
- Your children can sit at an "allergy kid" table. Counter: This does nothing to lessen the risk post-lunch, when kids leave their tables with peanuts on their hands, touch doorknobs, sports equipment, etc., throughout the school, increasing exposure risk.
- This isn't a change - we have not been a nut free county. Counter: True, but offering thousands of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches weekly to students very clearly increases risk of exposure for those who are vulnerable.
Peanuts in school meals pose a significant risk to not only our children but also to every child in the county with a similar allergy. The introduction of peanuts into school menus creates an environment where children are constantly at risk, even in a place where they should feel safe. Accidents can happen anywhere on school premises, increasing the likelihood of exposure. Considering the speed at which anaphylaxis progresses, relying solely on epi-pens isn't a sufficiently preventive measure. We should not wait for a tragedy to make necessary adjustments.
It is vital for parents, educators, and decision-makers to come together to prioritize the safety and well-being of our children. We urge the Douglas County School District to reconsider their menu options and remove peanuts completely from school meals. This action will ensure that our school environments remain safe spaces for all students.
