Remove paid parking at Westfield Carousel
The issue
Every day, I make my way to work at Westfield Carousel with a heavy heart, not only because of the daily grind, but also because of the looming expense of paid parking that eats into my already tight budget. Westfield Carousel is located in a lower socioeconomic area of Perth, where many of us, both employees and customers, juggle multiple jobs and strive to make ends meet. For minimum wage workers like me, each dollar counts significantly, and paying for parking seems like an unjust penalty.
The introduction of paid parking at Westfield Carousel feels like a calculated burden placed upon those who can least afford it. It’s not just a matter of inconvenience; this is an issue of fairness and dignity. For staff members who dedicate their time and effort to ensure customers have a pleasant experience, and for visitors who choose to support local businesses despite their financial struggles, paid parking is a hurdle they shouldn’t have to face.
The impact of this policy is far-reaching. Consider a worker who earns minimum wage, which in Western Australia is currently $21.51 per hour as of 2023. If they work an average shift of eight hours, parking fees can unjustly consume a notable portion of their daily earnings, effectively lowering their hourly wage. For customers, especially those who are parents or elderly, this added expense can be a deterrent from visiting at all, which in turn negatively affects the businesses operating within the centre.
Other malls in similar socioeconomic areas have recognized this challenge and opted for solutions that don't strain their staff or customers financially. Free parking encourages more foot traffic, which benefits everyone—workers, patrons, and businesses. By removing paid parking, we can revitalise our community, making it a more accessible and inviting place for everyone.
I urge Westfield management to listen to the voices of their customers and staff who are unfairly disadvantaged by this policy. By removing paid parking fees at Westfield Carousel, they can set a precedent for other shopping centres and prove that they value their community beyond mere profit.
Stand with me and countless others who believe in fairness and accessibility. Sign this petition to demand the removal of paid parking at Westfield Carousel, making it a welcoming place for all.
