Remove Owen Coyle as manager of Blackburn Rovers FC

The Issue

On Thursday 2nd June 2016 Owen Coyle was appointed manager of Blackburn Rovers FC to the astonishment of fans across the country.

Blackburn Rovers compete in one of the best leagues in Europe. They require a manager with a skill set which includes, amongst other things, the ability to:

  • Work well in the transfer market to ensure the limited funds that we have available are spent wisely on a mix of experienced players and up and coming youngsters.
  • Work well in the loan market using connections within the game to attract premier league fringe players/youth to the club.
  • Be tactically aware and able to change game plans within games when neccessary.
  • Be firm but fair with the playing staff. Have a good relationship with the fans.
  • Have a track record which suggests getting the club back to where it desires is possible.

We believe Owen Coyle fails to match any of the above criteria and therefore should never have been considered for what is a very well paid position.
  • Mr Coyle's record in the transfer market is, at best, average.
  • It is clear from his management record that his only tactic is 'motivation'. This works for a while as his real tactical flaws are brushed under the carpet. At every club he has worked the bubble eventually bursts and the team is thrown into turmoil.
  • Reports from people at Burnley suggest Coyle is a soft touch. He regularly awarded days off for golf and other activities. We don't need this lack of discipline at Ewood Park.
  • The relationship between the manager and fans of a footbal club is extremely important. Our recent downfall began when the relationship between the fans and ex manager Steve Kean completely broke down. Owen Coyle is an ex manager of three our our local rivals including fierce rivals Burnley. He has publicly criticised our fans in the past. All of that plus his complete lack of suitability for this position means he will NEVER have the fans on his side. Expect intense fan protests from day one.
  • Owen Coyle's managerial record is a disgrace. He all but relegated Burnley, relegated Bolton and was on course for a third relegation with Wigan Athletic before they sacked him. His win percentages are 42% (Burnley), 33% (Bolton), 30% (Wigan) and 34% in his most recent disaster at MLS side Houston Dynamo where he failed to win in 31 of his 47 games in charge leaving them bottom of the table.

The likely response to fan reaction from Coyle will be something along the lines of 'it's because of my Burnley links, a few good results will win the fans over'.

Let us state 100% that Mr Coyle being an ex-Burnley manger has nothing to do with the fans disgust at his appointment. We believe his dismal mangerial record gives him no right to be considered for the post. Especially with other reasonable candidates available. He has sent every club he has touched onto a monumental slippery slope and we don't want to be next.

Owen Coyle has done NOTHING to even warrant an interview for the well paid and respected job of Blackburn Rovers manager. Please remove him from his position as soon as possible to prevent further damage to this historic club.
