Remove or reduce the NJ phone ban rules
The Issue
If you are a student, parent, or guardian in New Jersey, this policy affects you — and it affects me too.
I am asking for your support in reconsidering the statewide school cell phone ban because, while the intention behind it may be good, the reality is that it creates more problems than it solves.
For me and many other students, a phone is not just a distraction. It is a lifeline. In emergencies, medical situations, lockdowns, or even unexpected transportation issues after school, having access to a phone can make a real difference. Taking that away does not make students feel safer — it makes us feel more vulnerable.
Phones also matter for mental health. Many students deal with anxiety, medical conditions, or stressful personal situations. Knowing I can contact a parent or guardian if something is wrong helps me stay calm and focused during the school day. A complete ban removes that sense of security.
Parents and guardians are affected as well. Coordinating rides, schedule changes, and after-school activities becomes much harder when students have no access to their phones. This policy creates unnecessary stress for families across New Jersey.
One of my biggest concerns is that this ban treats all students the same. High school students are capable of learning responsible phone use. Schools should be teaching balance and accountability, not avoiding the issue altogether. A total ban does not prepare us for the real world.
Enforcing this policy also places extra pressure on teachers, who already have enough to manage. Time spent confiscating phones or arguing over rules is time taken away from learning.
I am not asking for phones to be used freely during class. I am asking for a reasonable, common-sense approach, for example requiring them to not be used during lessons, and requiring them to be placed on silent.
This petition is about safety, communication, and trust. It is about listening to the students and families who live with the effects of this policy every day.
