The Issue

The recent installation of raised bike lanes on Elliot Street in Newton Upper Falls, was intended to serve as a measure for calming traffic. However, the decision to introduce these bike lanes, especially on the blind curve section, has raised significant safety concerns among residents. My personal reservation stems from the observation that a limited bike lane extending merely 30 to 50 yards does little to encourage cycling over driving. It fails to provide a compelling alternative for transportation and instead exacerbates traffic issues. The design narrows the street so radically that it poses a severe risk to drivers, particularly those who are young, elderly, or distracted. This makes navigating Elliot Street unexpectedly dangerous, increasing the potential for accidents rather than alleviating them.

For a community that prides itself on safety and environmental sustainability, it is crucial to implement solutions that truly enhance safety for all road users. Traffic calming must not come at the expense of driver safety. We have an opportunity to revisit the manner in which traffic is controlled on Elliot Street and implement alternative solutions that benefit everyone.

There are numerous more effective and safer approaches to calming traffic. For instance, speed bumps, more visible pedestrian crosswalks, and better signage could be explored without introducing unnecessary hazards  (these were all items in the approved bid, but not installed, and we have received no confirmation that they will be after multiple, failed attempts to get an answer) . Furthermore, improving existing traffic signals and road markings could serve the purpose of controlling speed while ensuring that cyclists, pedestrians, and drivers can coexist safely.

I urge the City Council and Traffic Council of Newton to reconsider the current layout of Elliot Street. Let's work together to remove the newly established bike lanes and focus on adopting traffic calming measures that cater to the diverse needs of our community. This request does not undermine the value of cycling infrastructures, but rather calls for a balanced approach that truly prioritizes safety for all.

By signing this petition, you join in advocating for effective, inclusive, and safe traffic solutions on Elliot Street. Together, we can make a difference for our community's now and future. Please sign and help us impact positive change. Thank you.
