The Issue

When I was visiting my elderly mother, I found myself unable to call for important updates on her health because of New Jersey's restrictive phone ban. This experience deeply impacted me, making it clear how such a regulation can hinder personal and emergency communication. While the intention to reduce distracted driving is valid, the blanket ban on phone use doesn't account for real-world scenarios where phone access is essential.

New Jersey's current phone ban impedes our ability to stay connected with loved ones and handle emergencies efficiently. Statistically, while distracted driving is a serious issue, the ban doesn't discern between dangerous phone use and necessary communication. According to a 2021 study by the National Safety Council, while phone usage accounted for a significant number of distracted driving accidents, many of these instances involved messaging, not using phones in general for calls.

Other states have piloted more nuanced policies, such as hands-free laws, which allow drivers to use phones safely without taking their eyes off the road. States like Georgia and Arizona have implemented such laws and have reported a decrease in related accidents by over 10%, according to their Departments of Transportation. This evidences that a balanced approach can effectively reduce the risks while still enabling necessary communication.

Moreover, communication is a lifeline for many, especially those with elderly family members or those living in rural areas where immediate physical assistance is not readily available. An outright ban overlooks these scenarios and undermines our ability to act swiftly in times of need.

We propose that New Jersey revises its phone ban to adopt a hands-free phone use law, similar to those proven effective in other states. This change would not only maintain the focus on road safety but also ensure that New Jersey residents have the essential capability to connect in critical situations.

Please support this petition to urge New Jersey lawmakers to reconsider the phone ban and adopt a more balanced and effective solution. Your signature can help create a law that prioritizes both safety and communication. Sign this petition to make a difference for all New Jersey residents.
