Remove Misleading Mableton Sign Impacting Smyrna Homeowners and Property Values

Remove Misleading Mableton Sign Impacting Smyrna Homeowners and Property Values
The Issue
A “Mableton City Limits” sign has been placed on Cooper Lake Road immediately before drivers enter Smyrna, creating confusion about the true city boundary and municipal jurisdiction. Residents of Nickajack Retreat and surrounding Smyrna communities respectfully request the removal of this recently installed sign.
The sign is currently positioned directly in front of the Nickajack Retreat neighborhood, which is located within the City of Smyrna — not Mableton. Its placement creates the strong impression that drivers are entering Mableton when they are actually exiting Mableton and entering Smyrna.
This has led to ongoing confusion for visitors, delivery drivers, service providers, and prospective homebuyers.
In fact, the misleading placement has already impacted at least one homeowner’s ability to sell their property, as prospective buyers have questioned the home’s municipal location.
The confusion is further compounded by the absence of Smyrna city limit signage in the immediate area, allowing the Mableton sign to dominate the perception of the neighborhood’s jurisdiction. Accurate municipal signage is a basic expectation for residents and plays an important role in preserving property value, community identity, and public trust.
While we understand the sign location was selected to reduce the number of signs along Cooper Lake Road, accuracy in municipal boundary identification is essential. Clear signage helps protect community identity, supports the real estate market, and ensures residents and visitors understand exactly where they are.
The image above shows the Mableton city limits (outlined in red) and the placement of the sign relative to the Smyrna boundary.
While a very small portion of Cooper Lake Road briefly enters Mableton, the current placement of the sign creates the misleading impression that the surrounding area is part of Mableton, when it is actually located within Smyrna.
Because the overwhelming majority of this section of Cooper Lake Road and the adjacent neighborhoods are within Smyrna, the current placement creates unnecessary confusion for residents, visitors, and prospective homebuyers.
We respectfully request that the sign be removed.
Our goal is not to create conflict between neighboring cities, but to ensure clarity, accuracy, and fair representation of our community.
Our neighborhood is proud to be part of Smyrna. We simply want signage that accurately reflects where our community belongs. Residents deserve clear municipal identification, and visitors deserve accurate geographic guidance.
If you agree that municipal boundaries should be clearly and accurately marked, please sign this petition.
