As a woman deeply concerned about the welfare of other women, I am calling for the removal of Matt Rife’s comedy special “Natural Selection” from Netflix. This show is not only offensive to victims of domestic violence but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and attitudes towards women at large. Moreover, Rife's response to criticism has been filled with misogyny and ableism, further demonstrating his disregard for these serious issues.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV), one in four women will experience severe physical violence by an intimate partner during their lifetime. Comedy that makes light of such a grave issue can be extremely triggering for survivors and contributes to a culture that trivializes domestic abuse.

Furthermore, according to a study published in The Journal of Communication (2015), media portrayals can significantly influence public perceptions about social issues including gender equality. Thus, content like "Natural Selection," which promotes harmful stereotypes about women, can contribute negatively towards societal attitudes and norms.

We urge Netflix as a global streaming platform with over 200 million subscribers worldwide (Statista 2021) to take responsibility for the content it hosts. We call on them not only remove this particular comedy special but also implement stricter guidelines for content that may be harmful or offensive towards marginalized groups.
