Pine View School for the Gifted was established in 1969 as a traditional public school to serve the unique needs of gifted students. On December 14, 2015, Pine View was changed to a magnet school by the finance department at the Sarasota County School Board, without any stakeholder input.

By law, the magnet designation allows schools and districts to limit and deny choices for families, such as

• Creating a lottery for admissions
• limiting/denying online learning
• limiting/denying dual enrollment options
• limiting/denying acceleration

The magnet designation has the potential to remove choices for students and parents.
