Remove IXL as a tool at Harmony Public Schools, TX
The Issue
For just a few weeks, students at some of Harmony Public Schools, such as HSA Leander in Texas, have been using IXL for mathematics education, and the effects have been grueling. Students, including myself, have started feeling tired, burned out, and inadequate, especially when we get questions wrong. The pressure to achieve perfection on the platform is overwhelming and detrimental to our overall educational experience.
IXL’s system, which penalizes students for incorrect answers by reducing the score, inadvertently discourages learning by instilling a fear of failure. It's become a source of stress rather than a productive learning tool, leading to a decline in motivation and confidence among students. This is not how education, especially mathematics, should be embodied. We need an approach that encourages growth and understanding, not one that promotes anxiety and exhaustion.
Many educational experts and academic studies emphasize that positive reinforcement and constructive feedback are much more effective in educational settings, particularly in challenging subjects like mathematics. While IXL offers immediate feedback, the quality and nature of this feedback often do not align with best educational practices. The feedback is mechanical and less personalized, failing to address different learning styles and needs.
There are alternative tools and programs that can better cater to diverse learners, offering comprehensive and supportive educational experiences without the undue stress. Programs like Khan Academy and Prodigy give learners the chance to explore and progress at their own pace, providing positive reinforcement and tailored guidance.
With your support, we can urge Harmony Public Schools to reconsider their decision and switch from IXL to more supportive and adaptive learning tools that will foster a healthier and more enjoyable educational environment. Our goal is to promote learning through encouragement and the joy of discovery, rather than through punitive scoring systems.
By signing this petition, you are joining the call for a more humane and effective educational approach in mathematics that supports every student's potential and nurtures their love for learning. Please sign and help make a change that truly benefits students' educational journeys.
