The State Trading Corporation of Bhutan Limited (STCBL) recently imposed a restriction on the direct import of Toyota vehicles from India for personal use, in response to a surge in individual imports of Toyota Hyryder vehicles. This sudden decision has had immediate and severe impacts on many individuals, myself included, who have already obtained the necessary import approvals from the Department of Trade and even secured vehicle loans through banks to facilitate this process.

In my case, I meticulously followed the official procedures to obtain the approval for importing a Toyota Hyryder from an authorized Indian dealer. With everything in order and ready for import, the abrupt introduction of this restriction has not only disrupted my plans but also jeopardized my financial commitments and expectations.

STCBL’s restriction doesn't just affect individual plans; it undermines the commitments made by citizens and the trust we place in public policies when they are subject to sudden changes without warning or public consultation. Many other citizens, just like myself, are now facing potential financial repercussions due to bank loans that were approved and arranged based on previously valid import approvals.

Allowing individuals to resume importing Toyota Hyryder vehicles directly from authorized dealers in India is a practical solution. It would not only uphold the commitments made by citizens who followed due process but also support the rights of individuals to make personal decisions about their transportation needs within the legal framework.

The resurgence in personal imports of Toyota Hyryder vehicles, rather than being seen as a problem, should be viewed as a testament to the confidence consumers have in making informed choices about their vehicles. It reflects a healthy demand for energy-efficient and high-performance vehicles, aligning with Bhutan's commitment to sustainability and reduced fuel consumption.

To make matters worse, the STCBL themselves are not willing to deal in importing this vehicle.

We urge STCBL to reconsider this restriction and take into account the preparedness and compliance shown by those of us who obtained prior approvals. Lifting the ban will restore faith in the regulatory framework and demonstrate a commitment to supporting citizens’ rights and economic well-being.
