The Issue

According to the 2022 census over 84.6% of Irish people identify as Christian, yet schools serve almost exclusively halal meals to our pupils, and with RTE's Emma O'Kelly claiming that all the food served is halal. One local national school only offer 2 halal free dishes out of 23 options, with no halal alternatives offered for 3 out of 5 days.

Ritualistic religious slaughter methods, such as halal and kosher, are a barbaric and archaic means of killing animals. Poultry, cattle and lamb have their throats slit and are bled out inhumanely. Countries such as Sweden, France,  Norway, Iceland, Slovenia, Belgium, Denmark, Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany have banned these inhumane methods.

The European Court of Human Rights rules in favour of Belgium's ban with the 7 judge opinion stating “The protection of animal welfare constitutes an ethical value to which contemporary democratic societies attach increasing importance and that should be taken into account when assessing restrictions placed on the external manifestation of religious convictions”: Executief van de Moslims van België and Others v. Belgium - 16760/22, 16849/22, 16850/22 et al. Judgment 13.2.2024 [Section II]

A significant fee must be paid to Islamic institutions in order to obtain halal certification. The Parliament of Australia has claims "In the US, France and Canada it has been proven that halal certification schemes directly funded Hamas and the Muslim brotherhood". Notwithstanding the controversies of where this money ends up this author regards the procurement of halal food as showing favour to one particular denomination at the expense of all others. Certain Christian denominations, as well as Sikhs, are not permitted the consumption of halal food.

Irish school children and their parents, of all faiths, should be free to opt of supporting these barbaric and inhumane slaughter practices, and to opt out of the funding of any singular religious organisation.
