Remove GST from fresh food in the hospitality sector
The issue
Having dedicated over 25 years to the hospitality industry, I have witnessed first-hand the detrimental shift that current tax policies have imposed on our beloved industry. Australia, it is time to wake up and fight back against a system that sets us up to fail. Every day, cafés and restaurants struggle to sustain their businesses, with an average profit margin of just 3.8%, while business loans sit at approximately 8% secured, and well over 11% unsecured. The numbers simply don't add up, leading to a dangerous trajectory of closures and job losses.
As someone who has lived and breathed the challenges and triumphs of hospitality, it pains me to see our vibrant industry crumbling under this outdated and broken framework, and no one doing anything about it. The inclusion of GST on fresh food served in food establishments is a significant factor contributing to our decline. It's an additional burden that directly cuts into the already razor thin margins, making it almost impossible for businesses to survive.
The hospitality sector is an integral part of Australia's culture and economy, providing employment to thousands and enriching the lives of communities across the nation. And yet, according to a report by Restaurant & Catering Australia's 2022 industry insights, nearly 60% of hospitality businesses have considered temporary or permanent closures due to rising costs.
By removing the GST on fresh food served in the hospitality sector, we can alleviate some of the financial pressures these businesses face. This change can provide a lifeline to many struggling establishments, allowing them to reinvest in their businesses, retain staff, and continue offering fresh, quality food to the public, that Australia is known best for.
Let's take a step towards ensuring the survival and revitalization of our hospitality industry. This is not just about numbers; it's about preserving livelihoods and maintaining a vibrant community fabric. Other countries like the UK have adjusted their VAT on specific food service provisions during challenging economic times, and it’s time for Australia to consider similar measures.
I urge you to join this fight in supporting our hospitality heroes, the backbone of Australia’s dining scene. Sign this petition to advocate for the removal of GST on fresh food in the hospitality sector and help save the future of countless families and businesses.
