Remove Godfrey Kiptum, the Commissioner and CEO of IRA from Office
The Issue
As the chairman of an agents association in Kenya, i.e. Bima Intermediaries Association of Kenya (BIAK), it is disheartening to witness the continuous suffering of our members and clients due to unresolved issues in the insurance industry. Mr. Godfrey Kiptum, whose term in office as the Commissioner of Insurance has already expired, remains in his position illegally. Under his leadership, corruption has flourished, with insurance companies avoiding payment of claims and withholding commissions from agents.
Repeated reports of these malpractices to Mr. Kiptum's office have been ignored, allowing these injustices to continue unaddressed. Our members, who work tirelessly to serve their clients, endure financial stress due to unpaid commissions. Meanwhile, policyholders are left stranded, unable to access their entitled benefits when they need them the most.
According to the Association of Kenya Insurers, the insurance sector plays a crucial role in the country's economic stability, contributing approximately 2.8% to the GDP as of 2020. However, the perpetuation of corrupt practices detracts from this potential, hindering economic growth and stability. The delayed payment of claims not only undermines consumer trust but also contravenes the ethical standards the industry should uphold.
Immediate action is necessary to restore integrity in the insurance sector and protect all stakeholders from further exploitation. We must demand the removal of Mr. Godfrey Kiptum from his illegal position and ensure that a competent and ethical leader fills the role. Strengthening oversight mechanisms to hold insurance companies accountable and guarantee timely payment of claims and commissions must be a priority.
