Remove foie gras from the Hitchin Priory menu
The Issue
Join me in asking the Hitchin Priory to do the right thing and remove foie gras from their menu.
It is an incredibly cruel and barbaric practice to produce foie gras. The ducks and geese are force‑fed through having large amounts of grain and fat pumped into their stomachs multiple times per day. This causes their livers to enlarge up to ten times their normal size, leading to severe mobility issues, stress behaviours, and significant health problems. The birds are typically kept in cramped cages or crowded sheds where they cannot groom or bathe, resulting in poor hygiene and infections. Reporters and investigations have documented birds appearing listless, lame, and suffering from conditions such as esophageal damage, fungal infections, diarrhea, heat stress, and bone fractures. Mortality rates during force‑feeding can be up to 20 times higher than in non–force‑fed birds.
Foie gras only uses the livers of male ducks and so the female ducklings (around 40 million annually in France) are killed shortly after hatching because they are deemed "useless" to the industry, often by being ground up alive for use in products like fertilizer or pet food.
There are plenty of delicious and innovative alternatives to foie gras, such as products developed from plants. Many top chefs and restaurants have already embraced these alternatives, finding them to be equally satisfying to the palate while promoting kindness towards animals.
I'm sure you can agree that it is so unnecessary to cause this amount of suffering just for a moment of taste. An animal's life is worth SO much more than that.
Therefore, we urge the owner and management team of the Hitchin Priory to take a stand against animal cruelty and set an example for others in our community to follow. Let's create an inspiring change that not only respects animal welfare and rights but also enhances the dining experience for everyone.
