The Issue

Mass surveillance impacts us all. The installation of Flock cameras in Lynnwood, WA marks a significant encroachment into our privacy—an encroachment that concerns not just me, but every resident who values their freedom and civil liberties. Without prior community consent, these AI-powered surveillance tools have been placed within our environment, tracking our movements without explicit permission.

Flock Safety has marketed these cameras as tools for enhancing community safety, yet there's little evidence to support their effectiveness in actually reducing crime rates. Instead, what we face is a constant invasion of our daily lives, a chilling effect on our right to privacy, and the potential for misuse.

The human right to privacy is enshrined in our Constitution, it must not be compromised by technologies that monitor and store our private data without oversight. Flock Safety cameras scan and log license plate data, and while intended for law enforcement, they could easily fall into the wrong hands or be used for unlawful purposes.

Moreover, allowing one company to hold this data centralizes power in a manner that could lead to abuse. This is not just a local issue; it’s a national wake-up call against the normalization of mass surveillance technologies.

We urge the Lynnwood City Council to cancel the contract with Flock Safety immediately to protect our community values. Furthermore, we call upon our lawmakers to introduce legislation preventing such technologies without expressed approval from the constituents directly impacted.

Let's stand together to safeguard our community’s privacy and insist on transparency and accountability from those who choose surveillance methods that deeply impinge upon our freedoms. Please sign this petition to demand action now.
