Remove Flock AI Cameras from the Cape Fear Region

The Cape Fear region is under warrantless AI surveillance. Flock's automated license plate readers photograph every passing car — plate, make, color, location, time — and log it in a searchable, nationwide database. No warrant. No suspicion. No way to opt out.
This began as a New Hanover County petition, and it worked: on September 8, 2026, the New Hanover County Commissioners voted unanimously to cancel the county's Flock contract. But the cameras did not stop at the county line. Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Wrightsville Beach run their own readers. So do Brunswick, Pender, Columbus, and Onslow counties — and towns and municipalities across the region. This petition now speaks for the entire Cape Fear region.
America protects its citizens' liberties; it does not track them like a scene from Orwell's 1984. These cameras record where you drive, worship, seek care, and gather — building a movement history of people accused of nothing. Public records show these networks have been searched millions of times, with the searching agencies and officers redacted. We cannot see who is watching us, or why.
The evidence that mass surveillance reduces crime is thin. The evidence that it gets abused is not: officers across the country — and here in North Carolina — have used these systems to stalk, and federal agencies have tapped local cameras without local consent. Groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation have documented the risks for years.
The county commissioners, town councils, and sheriffs who fund these programs are the only ones who can end them. Sign to ask every government in the Cape Fear region — New Hanover, Brunswick, Pender, Columbus, and Onslow counties; Carolina Beach, Kure Beach, and Wrightsville Beach; and all towns and municipalities within them — to remove Flock AI cameras and protect the privacy of everyone who drives here.
